Choosing the Right Rug for Your Deck

By admin on July 9, 2017

Colorful rugs are the deck accessory to have this summer. It’s easy to see why: rugs add visual interest to a deck, can define a space as a seating or relaxing area, and provide a softer surface for babies and toddlers to play on. As Metrowest builders, we’re seeing many local homeowners embrace this trend. With that in mind, here are some tips for choosing the right rug for your deck:

1) Outdoor Rugs are #1 Choice.

There are three types of rugs: indoor, indoor/outdoor, and outdoor. Technically, all rugs can be used outdoors, but they may not stay looking good for long if they’re not made to withstand the elements. Outdoor rugs are designed to be color-fast and quick-drying. This makes them the best choice for use on decks and patios in the MetroWest area.

2) The Thinner The Better

It is going to rain, and your deck rug will get wet. Thinner rugs dry faster: important for the longevity of your rug and the deck below. If you’re in love with a thicker rug for your deck, commit yourself to hanging up to dry after heavy rains. This will prevent mold and insects from thriving beneath the damp rug surface.

3) Colors Should Compliment Your Home’s Exterior

If you’re feeling bold and experimental, a deck rug is a good place to let your creative instinct run wild. Colorful patterns and stripes are very on trend for 2017. Choose the outdoor rug that makes your heart happy, making sure that at least one of the major colors in the rug compliments your home’s exterior. Many home designers use the rug as the focal point of a deck design, choosing furniture, pillows, and accessories that tie in to colors in the rug.

4) Have a Plan for Winter Storage

No matter what type of rug you choose for your deck, it will last longer if you store it away from the elements during the winter. Your deck will be fine, especially if you’ve had your MetroWest builders use PVC or composite decking. When spring rolls around again, bring the rug back out!
