Can You Build a Sunroom on a Deck?

By admin on September 15, 2020

“We have a good sized deck on our home, but we don’t really use it,” Jason said. “It’s always too cold, or too hot, or too windy – whatever the case may be, the deck’s just so much wasted space right now. Can you build a sunroom on a deck? I’m envisioning a place where we can hang out, comfortably, no matter what the weather is doing.”

Converting a deck into a sunroom is a very popular project in the Metrowest area. The truth is that we have beautiful summers in this region – beautiful short summers. Spring can be cold and chilly; autumn has been known to include early snow. Having a sunroom built on your deck can make a lot of sense.

There are some things you need to know. First and foremost, you’ll want an experienced deck builder handling this project with you: it’s critical to ensure that your deck has an adequate foundation to support the weight of a sunroom on it. Sunrooms may be all or mostly glass, but they are quite heavy. Additionally, while prefabricated sunroom kits exist, they just don’t offer the level of quality many Metrowest MA homeowners choose willingly. Custom build sunrooms can be crafted to look as if they were original to the house, boosting both curb appeal and value.

Building a sunroom on a deck is one of the most cost-effective ways to add space to your home. It’s also a project that can be completed fairly quickly, especially if you’re working with experienced deck builders. Many Metrowest families who have sunrooms built on their decks use the room throughout the year, either as a family room, for a home office, or as a space for the kids to play. Pets love sunrooms too: pet parents report that their canine and feline companions seem to be more cheerful and better behaved with the extra space and daylight a sunroom provides.

The Romantic Deck

By admin on September 1, 2020

“Listen, we have three kids, two dogs, and a business,” Meredith said. “As nice as the idea of a romantic getaway sounds, in real life, that’s not in the cards for us. So that means you have to do what you can at home.”

“And she’s already remodeled the bedroom twice,” her husband Don laughed. “So when she asked if we could have a second-story deck built off of our bedroom, I kind of knew where she was heading with the whole thing.”

“Is there anything more romantic than watching the stars together?” Meredith said. “With a glass of wine?”

Creating the Romantic Deck

As deck builders in Milford, we know that designing the romantic deck is all about ambiance, privacy, and romantic amenities. Second story decks are a nice way to add a balcony to the master bedroom. These decks are often smaller than a first story deck – although we’ve built some second story decks that are large enough to accommodate hot tubs and other luxury amenities.

Everyone has their own vision of romance and how that’s best expressed in home design. Our deck design philosophy combines the classic elements of style presented in a way that captures the homeowner’s personality. For example, privacy elements can be created in countless ways, including country-casual latticework, the organic elegance of sculpted greenery, or with modern flair metal screening.

About those romantic amenities. Again, everyone has their own tastes, but it’s hard to go wrong with a fire feature. Whether you enjoy toasting marshmallows with your sweetheart or just want to relax by the flickering flames, a great fire feature is essential. Other popular options – waterfall fountains have their fans, and don’t overlook the potential of custom built seating that’s large enough for snuggling.

“Our bedroom deck was an anniversary present to ourselves,” Meredith said. “And it’s been worth every penny.”

Deck Builders in Sudbury

By admin on August 20, 2020

77% of American homeowners are planning home improvements this year, according to Fine Homebuilding. There are some home improvement trends that are nationwide – almost everyone would like a larger kitchen and an up-to-date bathroom – while some home renovations have more regional appeal. As South Shore building contractors, we’ve seen outdoor living become more and more important locally. Additionally, families are willing to invest to make their homes safer, more functional spaces for their children. Let’s look at what that means:

Outdoor Living: Home Improvements in Sudbury

Sudbury area summers are too nice to miss. Enjoy the benefits of living in one of the most beautiful parts of the state by adding outdoor living friendly features to your home. Custom built porches, decks, and balconies are tailored for the family’s preferences while boosting curb appeal and the home’s value. Gorgeous French doors make a lovely entrance way from the home and make taking in the view a pleasure all four seasons.

Sunrooms: Enjoy Outdoor Living & Extra Space

Sunrooms have been around for a very long time. When you tour the old great homes in Europe, it’s not unusually to find a room composed mostly, if not entirely, of glass. These sunrooms are also called conservatories, and they’re ideal for enjoying the beauty of the outdoors and the comfort of your home at the same time. We’ve seen many Sudbury families designing sunrooms that serve double duty as playrooms. They’re also great for entertaining.

Choose A Building Contractor Who Understands the Sudbury area

It’s possible to spend a ton of money improving your Sudbury home, but you don’t have to. The best route to saving money is to work with a well established Sudbury deck building company. Having roots in the community matters, because it’s the established companies who know how to source building materials affordably and have proven experience working with local building codes and regulations. 10 Tips to help you hire the perfect deck builder (Part 2 of 2)

By admin on August 10, 2020

Do you dream of the perfect deck for your Weston area home to socialize, relax, and enjoy with friends and family? Are you looking for the right person for the job, but don’t know how to go about it? If yes, you no longer need to worry. Here are some tips that will help you select the ideal deck builder for the job. (Continued from this post)

6. Choose the price befitting your budget. Don’t make the mistake of hiring the first deck construction company that gives you a low estimate. You also have to consider quality. This is why you need to compare a few quotes to determine what you get in return for the price. It’s better to choose based on the company reviews you’d read, your interactions, and the quotes received.

7. Hire a licensed and insured deck builder. Another essential point to consider is their insurance coverage and license. Things will get complicated and become a disaster if you hire someone who’s not insured or licensed. For example, you may be held responsible for any injuries sustained while working on your project.

8. Fix a timeline. Your chosen deck contractor should also be able to create a timeline for your project. They should be able to give you a date of completion. It’s important it’s because it holds them accountable if they don’t complete the project on time.

9. Crosscheck references. There’s one last thing you should do before hiring the right person. Contact their references and ask them about the contractors’ work, quality, crew professionalism, and if they completed the job on time. It gives you a better perspective, and reason to hire the right person.

10. Don’t forget your contractor. Yes, there’s a chance there will be a few rainy days that may cause an unavoidable delay on the project. Should this happened, it is still up to you to keep in touch with your Weston deck builder. Keeping in touch ensures you are on the same page, which is better than a lack of communication between you.

10 Tips to help you hire the perfect deck builder (Part 1 of 2)

By admin on July 15, 2020

Do you dream of the perfect deck for your Weston area home to socialize, relax, and enjoy with friends and family? Are you looking for the right person for the job, but don’t know how to go about it? If yes, you no longer need to worry. Here are some tips that will help you select the ideal deck builder for the job.

1. Ask friends and family members for recommendations. The best place to start your search is by talking to someone who got their deck repaired or replaced recently. You can learn about their experience and how well they thought the contractor did the job. Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone who has had deck work done. You can turn to the internet for help. Sites like Angie’s List are an excellent source for decking contractors. You can also check the reviews of various deck companies, and go through the phone book.

2. Speak with deck company owners. You should now be able to narrow down your search to a list of few potential deck builders. Next, call around and speak with potential deck companies or reach them through email. Introduce yourself and explain why you need a deck contractor. Please pay attention to how they interact with you. You want to hire someone interested and ready to work to create your dream deck. Cross off builders who don’t return calls, or who don’t seem to have time to talk to you. There’s a high chance they won’t have time to listen to your ideas later on if you hire them!

3. Find out more about the company. Ask about the company. Learn more, how long they have been building and repairing decks. It’s always better to hire someone more experienced because they can build you a better deck. Besides, they know how to handle things if something goes amiss.

4. Take a look at their work. It also helps if you can look at some of the contractor’s past work. The excellent deck contractors won’t shy away from doing so. They take pride in their work and will at least be ready to show a few previous jobs.

5. Ask for a quote. It’s when you have narrowed down your options to 3-5 deck builders that you can ask them to present you with a quote. Remember, you need to work within your budget, so they need to be able to build a deck you can afford.

Deck Construction Sudbury

By admin on June 15, 2020

Some people call this time of year summer, but we prefer the term porch season. This is the ideal time to gather in the casual comfort of your front porch with family and friends. Screened in porches are a great way to take advantage of the lovely weather we all long for when it’s the middle of February – without worrying about any bugs! And when the nights are hot and steamy, there’s no where better for a relaxing snooze than a Sudbury porch. Kids love these ‘camp outs’, which include all of the fun and no stress for the parents!

Of course, if you’re sleeping on the porch, you want to make sure it’s safe and secure. That means paying attention to your choice of porch windows and doors. The quality of construction really matters: you want to make sure that all entrance ways close securely and can be locked. 3 season porches are meant to be used throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The windows you choose for these porches should be attractive, energy efficient and secure. Screens are a must – you want to be able to enjoy the gorgeous weather – but when the forecast is a little more quirky, it’s good to be able to close the glass and keep the rain and wind out.

If your Sudbury home doesn’t have a porch already, you may want to consider adding one. Realtor.com reports regularly that porches and decks deliver consistently high levels of homeowner satisfaction, and they can deliver a tremendous boost to your home’s curb appeal. If your porch needs freshening up – it happens, especially on older homes – make sure to choose high quality vinyl clad porch windows to maximize the enjoyment you get out of your porch. Porch windows and doors are available in a variety of styles that go beyond the basics – come talk to us and discover what your options are!
