Wedding-Worthy Deck Design

By admin on November 19, 2019

Are wedding bells in your future – or in the future of someone you hold dear, such as your child or grandchild? A delightful tradition of yesteryear – having weddings in the family home – is making a comeback, especially as the prices of fancy wedding venues climb out of the reach of many couples.

If you’re going to have a wedding in your home, a fantastic deck can serve a number of roles. It can be the platform for family and friends to gather, provide seating and shade, be the outdoor kitchen the caterers use, and even be the stage where the happy couple tie the knot.

For best results, bring your Mass deck builders into the conversation early. Ideally, you’ll do this during the planning stages. That way you’ll get a custom deck built to your exact specifications. An experienced creative deck designer will come to you with ideas that can enhance your original concept.

For example, the choice of decking material is a subtle touch that can impact the look of your home before, during, and after the wedding. While wood is the traditional decking material throughout Massachusetts, choosing composite decking gives you the option to choose any of a multitude of colors with no need for an ongoing maintenance routine.

Composite decking is also a great choice for high traffic areas. This is great news if you’re hosting family weddings, but it’s also relevant if your calendar is full of things like kid’s birthday parties, barbecues with your buddies, hanging out with the family, or playing with the dogs. Composite decking also resists mold, mildew, and insect damage.

Bear in mind that the Massachusetts construction season is impacted by the winter weather. If you’ll need your wedding-worthy deck early in the year – think spring or early summer weddings, the time to talk to your Massachusetts deck contractor is now.

Patio vs Deck: What’s Right for Your Home?

By admin on April 19, 2019

If you’d like to spend more time outdoors this summer and want to boost your home’s curb appeal, adding a deck or patio makes sense. But what option is right for your home?

Many people use the terms patio and deck interchangeably, but there are differences between them. The primary differentiator is elevation. Decks are usually built at least a little bit above your property, while patios rest directly on the ground.

This means that the first factor when choosing a deck or patio is your building lot. The lay of the land can be a determining factor that dictates whether a patio is possible or you’ll need to have a deck built to meet your needs. Sloping, narrow lots are common in our region, which explains why you may see more decks than patios in your neighborhood.

There are two other factors to consider when choosing between a patio and a deck. The first factor is maintenance. Decks can be built out of many materials – as Massachusetts deck contractors, we work primarily with composite decking as well as wood – while patios are generally concrete, stone or brick. Composite decking needs virtually no maintenance – you’ll want to spray it with a hose when it gets grungy – while patios generally require more care to stay looking great.

Finally, cost is a consideration. The materials used in constructing a patio don’t have to be expensive – unless you choose an upscale stone or flagstone patio – but there’s a lot of labor involved. Decks are generally more affordable, and can be installed by an experienced local deck contractor very quickly. That’s an important consideration if you want your family to be able to start enjoying outdoor living right away – and it’s always nice to have a little extra money in the budget to have fun with!
